Toronto's Expanding Housing Options to include Garden Suites

Expanding Housing Options in Neighbourhoods is a City of Toronto initiative to facilitate more low-rise housing in residential neighbourhoods to meet the needs of our growing city. The City is working to expand opportunities for “missing middle” housing forms in Toronto, ranging from duplexes to low-rise walk-up apartments.

At its meeting on February 2, 2022, Toronto City Council expanded permissions to allow residents to build garden suites on residential properties in the City. Garden suites, like laneway suites, are generally smaller than the main house on the lot. The By-law is currently under appeal to the Ontario Land Tribunal and not yet in force.
